News Cue the Water! Pittsburgh, the Setting of "Flashdance" Movie, Will Launch Musical's National Tour in 2013 Flashdance – The Musical, the stage adaptation of the 1983 pop-filled hit film, is aiming for a Broadway launch in fall 2012, but its producers have already announced a second company for a national tour that will kick off in early 2013.

The tour will begin on Jan. 1, 2013, at the Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, PA, where the gritty story takes place. In it, a lady steelworker explores her true passion — dancing.

Flashdance will go on to play over 25 markets in North America. Additional cities and tour casting will be announced in the coming months.

Directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis, The Addams Family), Flashdance features a book by Robert Cary and Tom Hedley (co-writer of the original screenplay with Joe Eszterhas), music by Robbie Roth and lyrics by Robert Cary and Robbie Roth.

"With an initial premiere in London in 2010, the creatively reworked production of Flashdance will begin performances on Broadway in the fall of 2012 for an open-ended engagement at a theatre to be announced soon," according to the producers. In an ambitious move, this second company was announced Jan. 20, before the show appears in North America.

Here's how producers characterize the story: "Flashdance tells the unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a working-class girl from Pittsburgh striving to make her dreams of becoming a professional dancer a reality. She works by day at a steel mill, where she catches the eye of her boss Nick Hurley. By night she works as a 'flashdancer' at a local bar but longs to become a student at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy." The Paramount Pictures film had an international gross of $150 million. The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack featured the hits "Gloria," "Manhunt," "Maniac," "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and the Academy Award-winning theme "Flashdance - What a Feeling." All of these songs are included in Flashdance – The Musical, plus more than ten new songs penned by Cary and Roth.

The national tour of Flashdance is produced by NETworks Presentations LLC, Steven Baruch, Tom Viertel, Marc Routh, Richard Frankel, Christopher Malcolm, David Ian Productions and Transamerica.
