Douglas C. Wager's dramatic account of the Iraq War seen through the eyes of U.S. veterans began performances Sept. 18 at the Barrow Street Theatre. The production officially opens Sept. 24.
On Sept. 23 Yvonne Latty, who penned the book on which In Conflict is based, will join "The Miracle at St. Anna" screenwriter James McBride to discuss African Americans in the military and how the legacy of black veterans of World War II still relates to soldiers of color today.
Latty will return for the Sept. 25 discussion to speak with Vietnam and Iraq War veteran Ty Simmons. Joining them will be Tom Rader, who portrays Simmons in the production. The panel will discuss the Iraq and Vietnam wars and the changing nature of service in America.
The final scheduled talkback, scheduled for Sept. 30, will welcome activist Jennifer Hogg, who will lead a discussion on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy of the American military. Joining Hogg are former Marine Jeff Keys and cast member Tim Chambers.
The play, according to Culture Project, is "a compelling portrait of Iraq War veterans speaking out on duty, loss and the fight to stay alive amid one of the most controversial conflicts in modern American history. In Conflict captures the unheard voices and unpredictable experiences of 17 Iraq War veterans whose lives have been changed forever. Featuring men and women from all branches and ranks, Republican and Democrat, straight and gay, immigrants and natives, hailing from all parts of the country, these remarkable veterans represent America and its complexity."
The cast of comprises Tim Chambers, Stan Demidoff, Ethan Haymes, Amanda Holston, Suyeon Kim, Sean Lally, Joy Notoma, Sam Paul, Danielle Pinnock, Tom Rader and Damon Williams.
The creative team also includes Andrew Laine (set design), Marian Cooper (costume design), J. Dominic Chacon (lighting design), Warren Bass (video design), Gary Yong (video assistant), Christopher Cappello (sound design) and Paul Winnick (music advisor).
In Conflict will be performed in rotating rep with The Atheist, which begins its Culture Project run Oct. 7.
