Performance artist Dael Orlandersmith will get a Gimmick for her new play at New York Theatre Workshop. The solo show, which begins April 16 and opens May 4, tells of two childhood friends from East Harlem. Together they dream of careers as artists and the elusive gimmick that will take them out of their current surrounding into the life they desire.
Orlandersmith is no stranger to NYTW. In 1996, she performed her show Monster there. Previous pieces include Beauty's Daughter at American Place Theatre.
Chris Coleman will direct The Gimmick. Coleman is the artistic director of Atlanta's Actor's Express. He has also worked at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre.
