That leaves the much-admired Alsop, former music director of the Colorado Symphony and the music director of England's Bournemouth Symphony; Boreyko, who recently announced that he was leaving his position of the Winnipeg Symphony; Jordan, the young music director of Graz Opera; Asher Fisch, music director of the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv; Carlos Kalmar, music director of the Oregon Symphony; Pinchas Steinberg, music director of Geneva's Orchestra de la Suisse Romande; and Claus Peter Flor, the DSO's principal guest conductor.
It has been rumored that Charles Dutoit, former music director of the Montreal Symphony, and David Zinman, former music director of the Baltimore Symphony, are also candidates; both are leading conductors without a position at a major orchestra. But according to the News, the orchestra is more likely to pick a rising young talent, as it did when it hired Litton in 1994 and Eduardo Mata in 1977.
