Damian Lewis, John Goodman and Tom Sturridge American Buffalo Opens in West End Tonight | Playbill

News Damian Lewis, John Goodman and Tom Sturridge American Buffalo Opens in West End Tonight Damian Lewis, John Goodman and Tom Sturridge star in the new West End revival of David Mamet's 1975 play American Buffalo, which opens officially April 27 (following previews that began April 16) at Wyndham's Theatre, where it will play a limited season through June 27. It is directed by Daniel Evans.

They play three small-time crooks, Walter "Teach" Cole (Lewis), Don Dubrow (Goodman) and Bobby (Sturridge), who plan one big-time heist. According to press materials, "a tragedy of errors spins this razor-sharp and darkly funny play into a blistering account of divided loyalties, insatiable greed and a coveted Buffalo nickel."

Lewis was last seen on the West End stage in 2009 in The Minsanthrope at the Comedy Theatre. His stage work also includes extensive credits for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Laertes in Hamlet opposite Ralph Fiennes in the title role that transferred to Broadway, Five Gold Rings (Almeida) and Pillars of the Community (National Theatre). TV credits include playing Sergeant Nicholas Brody in "Homeland," for which he won the 2013 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series and a 2012 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Film credits include "Romeo and Juliet," "The Sweeney" and "Your Highness."

In a press statement, Lewis commented, "David Mamet is one of our greatest living playwrights and I’m thrilled to be performing in his brilliant American Buffalo. It's exciting for me to be back on stage, particularly as I will have the pleasure of working with director, Daniel Evans, who I trained with at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We’ve always wanted to work together and I really can't think of a more exciting project to partner on."

Goodman's stage credits include Waiting for Godot at Broadway's Studio 54, where he played Pozzo, and Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Public Theater, New York). He first came to prominence for his Golden Globe-winning role on TV's "Roseanne," in which he played Dan Conner and subsequently has become well-known for his frequent collaborations on screen with the Coen Brothers in films such as "Barton Fink," "The Big Lebowski" and "O Brother Where Art Thou?" Other film credits include "Argo," '"The Artist," "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Monuments Men."

In a press statement, Goodman commented, "I'm delighted to be returning to the stage, and to be making my West End debut, in such a fantastic project with two brilliant British actors both of whom I’ve admired for some time. David Mamet is a writer I have loved throughout my career and so I'm thrilled to be bringing his work alive on stage." Sturridge was seen on Broadway in 2013 in Orphans alongside Alec Baldwin and Ben Foster, for which he was Tony-nominated. Other stage credits in London include Punk Rock (at the Lyric Hammersmith, winning Critics Circle Best Newcomer Award), and Wastwater and No Quarter (both Royal Court). Films include "Being Julia," "The Boat That Rocked," "Effie Gray" and "On the Road."

In a press statement, he said, "It's a deep privilege to be offered the chance to do this play with Damian and John under Daniel's direction. I think the play is dangerous and delicate, funny and frightening. American Buffalo is special. I can't wait to fight to make an audience feel about it as I do."
