News Dance of the Holy Ghosts, Safe In Hell, People Next Door, Fresh Cherry Orchard Expected for Yale Rep's 2005-06 Season Yale Repertory Theatre's upcoming 40th anniversary season will include the world premiere of Marcus Gardley's Dance of the Holy Ghosts: A Play On Memory, the East Coast premiere of Amy Freed's Safe In Hell, Henry Adam's Edinburgh Fringe hit The People Next Door, and a co-presentation of Mabou Mines' Dollhouse.

"We maintain our commitment to the production of new works by the most original voices in the American and world theatre," artistic director James Bundy stated.  "The currency and national importance of these new plays will be complemented by invigorating new productions of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard directed by Yale Rep associate artist Bill Rauch and Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well."

The New Haven company will also team with Connecticut colleague the Long Wharf Theatre to present Mabou Mines' Dollhouse, March 31-April 1, 2006. Conceived, directed and adapted by Lee Breuer from Henrik Ibsen's classic, the new take on the drama casts all female roles with tall actresses, and male roles are played by actors under five feet tall.

A sixth play as well as casting and creative teams will be announced shortly. Productions will be performed at the University Theatre (at 222 York Street), New Theater (1156 Chapel Street) and the Yale Repertory Theatre (1120 Chapel Street).

The 2005-06 season (subject to change) will include:

  • Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard - directed by Bill Rauch (Oct. 7 29)
    Madame Ranyevskaya attempts to escape her woes in Paris at her Russian country estate only to discover trouble awaits her there in a new adaptation of the classic.
  • Amy Freed's Safe In Hell - (Nov. 11-Dec. 3)
    Set in 1691 Salem, this work retells the story of real-life father and son Puritan preachers Cotton and Increase Mather. The satire delves into the story behind the witch hunt.
  • Henry Adam's The People Next Door, - (Jan. 13-Feb. 4, 2006)
    A British man survives the post-9/11 panic by playing video games, collecting disability checks and tending to his reefer in his flat until a crazy cop enlists him in a covert counter-terrorism operation.
  • William Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well - directed by James Bundy (Feb. 17-March 18, 2006)
    An orphan girl Helena is in love with a handsome young nobleman named Bertram whose hand in marriage she is offered upon curing the ailing King of France. But the young Count runs off to war to escape her, setting off the heroine's quest across Europe to win his heart.
  • Marcus Gardley's Dance Of The Holy Ghosts: A Play On Memory - directed by Liz Diamond (March 24-April 15, 2006)
    An older man basks in the glow of his memories until an estranged grandson visits him after 18 years and he becomes faced with a different version of his past.
