"It can now be confirmed that ‘Blackstar’ is the forthcoming single and album from David Bowie. Contrary to inaccurate reporting on the sound and content of the album, only the following can be confirmed: The single will be released on November 20th and is not part of David’s theatre piece Lazarus," according to the official statement on the website. 

Rolling Stone magazine, however, has reported that the "Blackstar" album may feature music "penned for his secret theater project."

Lazarus is scheduled to begin performances at the New York Theatre Workshop Nov. 18, with an official opening night set for Dec. 7. The Off-Broadway production is a collaboration between Bowie and award-winning playwright Enda Walsh (Once). The story is inspired by Walter Tevis' best-selling 1963 novel "The Man Who Fell to Earth," and helmed by Obie winner Ivo Van Hove.

DavidBowie.com also announced Oct. 8 that Bowie had written four new songs for the musical. As recently reported, the show is set to feature 18 actors and musicians and will be set in the East Village and will offer a "hallucinatory journey" in the protagonist's mind. The cast features "Dexter" and Hedwig star Michael C. Hall, Cristin Milioti (Once) and The Last Ship's Michael Esper.
