Performance dates at the Warren Enters Theatre, Upton Hall, in Buffalo, NY, are March 13-15 and March 20-22.
Hair co-creator James Rado, original Broadway cast member Robert I. Rubinsky and original Broadway publicist Merle Frimark will attend the Feb. 9 rehearsal of Hair to offer insight into the ground-breaking show.
Hair features book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. The musical premiered at the Public Theater Oct. 17, 1967, and ran for six weeks; it moved to Broadway April 29, 1968 and ran for 1,873 performances. According to press notes, "The year is 1967, and the Vietnam War is at its height. In New York City, a tribe of hippies rails against the establishment, protesting intolerance, brutality, and the dehumanization of society. When Claude, one of their own, gets drafted, he must make a decision about what values are worth fighting for."
Nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway production of The Full Monty, Andre De Shields re-created his role as Noah "Horse" T. Simmons for the London production. He received another Tony nomination for his performance in Play On! and also starred on Broadway in The Wiz, Ain't Misbehavin' and Haarlem Nocturne. De Shields recently starred in The Classical Theatre of Harlem's production of Black Nativity and played the title role in King Lear.
