Congratulations to young actors Sam Trammell and Julyana Soelistyo, who both made big splashes in featured roles on Broadway this season. Both have won the 53rd annual Clarence Derwent Award for most promising male and female performers on the metropolitan scene.

The award ceremony will take place June 9, 2 PM (EST) at the NY office of Actors' Equity Association, the actors' union. Announcing the winners May 13 was Carl Harms, the award trustee and president of the Equity's Foundation.

Trammell first came to New York notice in My Night With Reg and Dealer's Choice and received acclaim this year in Lincoln Center's recent Ah, Wilderness!. Soelistyo plays two roles, old and young, in David Henry Hwang's Broadway drama, Golden Child, for which she got a Tony nomination as Best Actress in a Play.

Established in 1944 by actor Clarence Derwent, the Derwent Awards have honored such performers as George C. Scott, Ann Reinking, Gene Wilder and James Woods. Winners get $1,000 and a crystal trophy.

Judges for this year's awards were Harms, critics Irene Backalenick (Back Stage), Clive Barnes (NY Post), Michael Kuchwara (AP) and Michael Sommers (Newhouse newspapers), Douglas Watt (NY Daily News), Betty Corwin (of the NY Public Library's Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts' Film & Tape Archive), librettist Peter Stone, producer Robert Whitehead, and Actors' Equity President Ron Silver. -- By David Lefkowitz
