Boneta, who had a recurring role on ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars," launched his career as a singer in Mexico and had a hit in 2008 with the single “Perdido En Ti” (“Losing Me”).

Adam Shankman, who directed and choreographed the film adaptation of Hairspray, will direct Rock of Ages' big-screen premiere. Filming, according to the industry paper, will begin May 19 in Florida.

The film will also feature Alec Baldwin as Dennis, Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian, Mary J. Blige as Justice, Russell Brand as Lonnie and Paul Giamatti as the manager of the rock band. The motion picture, based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name, will arrive in movie theatres around the country June 1, 2012.

Deadline.com previously reported that Oscar nominee Amy Adams is being courted for a role in the film.

The musical's book writer, Chris D'Arienzo, has penned the screenplay for the film with revisions by Shankman and Justin Theroux; it will be produced by Rock of Ages Broadway producers Carl Levin, Matthew Weaver and Scott Prisand, with Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot. Executive producers are Garrett Grant, Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver.

Rock of Ages, which uses hits from the 1980s as its score, premiered Off-Broadway at New World Stages in October 2008. The musical transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway in March 2009, earning five Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Actor for Constantine Maroulis. The production will reopen March 24 at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
