With the recent premiere of the entertaining and informative "Six By Sondheim," the HBO documentary that explores the work of Tony-winning composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, it seemed like a good time to revisit six interviews that I conducted in spring 2010 in honor of Sondheim's 80th birthday. The masterful writer celebrates his 84th birthday March 22.
Five women associated with the revered composer — Tony winners Barbara Cook, Patti LuPone, Donna McKechnie, Donna Murphy, Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch — all spoke with deep admiration for the co-creator of Gypsy, West Side Story, Company, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, Follies, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Passion, Anyone Can Whistle, Road Show and more.
