Di Stefano was attacked last week by unidentified assailants who were trying to rob him and his wife at their villa in Diani, 270 miles from Nairobi.

The singer suffered a blow to the head, and is still unconscious after two operations performed since the attack. Doctors are taking him off sedatives and plan a brain scan later this week to determine his condition.

The Sicilian-born singer was famous for duets with Maria Callas, and was considered one of the best singers in the world in the 1960s and '70s.
