News Drama League to Honor Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith Feb. 9 The Drama League will honor recent Broadway debuters Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas during its annual A Musical Celebration of Broadway Feb. 9, 2004.

The annual black-tie event, which features dinner and an original musical revue, will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. Last season's star-studded evening honored Broadway veteran Jerry Orbach.

Husband-and-wife actors Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith both made their Broadway debuts this year, he in Nine and she in Chicago. Banderas scored a Tony nomination for his performance as fictional film director Guido Contini, and Griffith earned a rave in the New York Times for her work as merry murderess Roxie Hart. Both recently departed their respective productions.

In a statement Drama League President Patricia Follert said, "Ms. Griffith and Mr. Banderas have blazed a brilliant trail from Hollywood to Broadway this season. Their fabulous performances brought new vitality to the musical theatre and we hope they will continue to lend their talents to the challenges of musical theatre in the future. It will be a joy and a privilege to add both of them to the list of stellar honorees, who we have had with us over the past 18 years, including Liz Smith, Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli, Kander and Ebb, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Hal Prince and Jerry Orbach."

The Drama League was created in 1916 to nurture artists and audiences for the American theatre. The Feb. 9 evening will benefit the Drama League's Directors Project, which has become the country's preeminent development program for promising theatre directors. Alumni of the program include Urinetown's John Rando, Thoroughly Modern Millie's Michael Mayer, Rocky Horror Show's Christopher Ashley and How I Learned to Drive's Mark Brokaw.

Tickets for the evening are not yet on sale, although those interested in attend may call The Drama League to be placed on a waiting list: (212) 244-9494.
