News Dreamgirls Benefit, With Patrice Covington, Wendy Fox, Natalie Wachen, Plays Asbury Park May 14 A one-night-only concert of the Motown musical Dreamgirls, the hit Broadway work about a girl group on the rise, is presented May 14 at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ.

The 8 PM concert serves as a benefit for the ReVision Theatre, which offers professional theatre year-round. Jamibeth Margolis directs the musical that has music by Henry Krieger and lyrics by the late Tom Eyen.

Patrice Covington, who appeared in the recent national tour of Dreamgirls, stars as Effie White, with Wendy Fox (The Lion King) as Deena Jones and Natalie Wachen as Lorell Robinson. The principal cast also features Nikkieli DeMone (Ragtime, Miss Saigon) as Curtis, Tony Perry (Ain't Misbehavin') as Marty, Curtis Wiley (The Lion King) as C.C. White and Kwame Remy-James as James "Thunder" Early.

Completing the cast are Bernard Dotson (Chicago, Ragtime, Finian's Rainbow), Dominique Sharpton, Briana Davis, Sean Watkins, Thaddeus McCants, Ruperta Nelson, Faren Brook Collins, Michael Dexter, Nikki Jenkins, Jason Veasey, Lauren Lebowitz, Clyde Voce, Haley Swindal, Shira Elias, Brandon Hightower and Spiro Galiatsatos.

Dreamgirls has choreography by Kenny Ingram, musical direction by Michael Thomas Murray, scenic design by Clifton Chadick, costume design by Robin Shane, lighting design by Jake Degroot and sound design by Karoline Budna.

Dreamgirls debuted on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in December 1981. The musical earned 11 Tony Award nominations in 1982 and took home six, including Best Book, Best Choreography, Best Lighting and a host of acting honors.
