Danai Gurira's harrowing play, about a group of women being held captive in Liberia, will wrap up its Public Theater engagement Nov. 29. The Broadway production, again directed by Liesl Tommy, is scheduled to begin previews Feb. 23, 2016, and open March 6 at the Golden Theater for a limited 17-week run with its Off-Broadway cast intact.
The Broadway version will be co-produced by The Public Theater, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones-Harvey, Paula Marie Black, Willette Klausner and Carole Shorenstein Hays. The production will mark the third high-profile transfer from the Public Theater in the last year, along with Tony-winning musical Fun Home and the musical phenomenon Hamilton.
The Golden's current tenant, The Gin Game is a limited run. Tickets for the Broadway engagement went on sale this morning, Oct. 20, for Citibank presale through 11:59 PM Oct. 27. Tickets go on sale to the general public 10 AM Nov. 2 via Telecharge (212) 239-6200. For more information visit EclipsedBroadway.com.
The cast also features a string of Broadway performers, including Saycon Sengbloh, whose credits include Hair, The Color Purple and Wicked, as well as Pascale Armand (The Trip to Bountiful), Akosua Busia (Mule Bone) and Zainab Jah (The Public's In Darfur).
The "vitally important" play is a story of survival and resilience set in post-colonial Africa. "A feminist reading of the Liberian Civil War, a war that was ended by women, Eclipsed is both heart-breaking and profoundly life-affirming," commented artistic director Oskar Eustis in an earlier press statement.
See director Tommy and Danai Gurira discussing their personal connections with the play below:
"Amid the chaos of the Liberian Civil War, the captive wives of a rebel officer band together to form a fragile community – until the balance of their lives is upset by the arrival of a new girl," states the Public's description of Eclipsed. "Drawing on reserves of wit and compassion, Eclipsed reveals distinct women who must discover their own means of survival in this deeply felt portrait of women finding and testing their own strength in a hostile world of horrors not of their own making."
Gurira is an award-winning, Zimbabwean-American playwright; her earlier works include In the Continuum and The Convert. As an actress, she is currently featured as Michonne on AMC’s "The Walking Dead."
Eclipsed features scenic and costume design by Clint Ramos; lighting design by Jen Schriever; original music and sound design by Broken Chord; hair, wig, and makeup design by Cookie Jordan; and voice and dialect by Beth McGuire.
Tickets of the remaining Off-Broadway run can be purchased by visiting PublicTheater or calling (212) 967-7555. The Public Theater is located at Astor Place at 425 Lafayette St., Manhattan.
