The 1999 Pulitzer Prize winner, Wit tells of a strict college poetry professor brought low -- to humility and humanity -- by her bout with ovarian cancer. Edson, a kindergarten teacher in Atlanta, GA, made her playwriting debut with Wit.

Playing Dr. Vivian Bearing -- a role originated by Megan Cole and made famous by Kathleen Chalfant -- is Kathleen Butler. Other castmembers include Joanna Olsen, Richard Bowden, Scott Reeves, Cindy Cheung, Jennifer Thomas, Paul Sticklin, Bryan Pitt and Margaret Elizabeth Mann. Designing the show are Jeffrey E. Salzberg (lighting) and Marcella Beckwith (costumes).

For tickets to Wit ($18-$26), call Florida Studio Theatre, 1241 North Palm Avenue, at (941) 366-9017.

Wit, starring Lisa Harrow, continues in New York, while L.A.'s Geffen Theatre has Chalfant in the lead, Jan. 18-March 5. Next up at FST will be 37 Postcards. -- By David Lefkowitz
