John (Billy Elliot, Aida, The Lion King) and Furnish have been in a domestic partnership for nine years and will now become legally married. Same-sex marriage officially became legal in London and Wales March 29, but the law allowing gay couples to convert their civil partnerships came into effect last week.

Furnish previously revealed the news in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Civil Partnerships have been legal there since 2005. Scotland also recently passed measures to allow gays and lesbians to legally marry.

"We don't feel the need to take an extra step legally," Furnish said. "But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example."

He continued, "We're living in extraordinary times. My god, 20 years ago, when I started seeing Elton, if you asked me if I’d be able to get married, if I'd be able to have children, it was unthinkable, literally unimaginable."
