News Ensemble Studio Theatre Will Stage Month of Shanley Plays in April The Ensemble Studio Theatre will present a free month-long engagement of the work of Tony and Academy Award-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley, beginning April 7.

Shanley, a longtime Ensemble Studio Theatre member, will be celebrated with staged readings of his plays that were developed at E.S.T. The performances of Shanley's works will play Tuesday evenings at 7 PM through April 28. As previously reported, E.S.T. will honor Shanley during its 2009 anniversary benefit dinner on May 4.

Shanley said in a statement, "E.S.T. is the fertile womb from which so much theatre has found life. I did many of my first readings of plays in their playwrights unit, including Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and Savage In Limbo. It is a round and satisfying thought that many of these scripts are being visited again, given voice by comrades old and new."

The schedule follows:

April 7: Savage In Limbo, directed by Deborah Hedwall and featuring Brad Bellamy, Maria Gabriele, Abigail Gampel, Jan Leslie Harding and Bruce MacVittie.

April 14: Four Dogs and a Bone, directed by Will Pomerantz and featuring James Murtaugh, Catherine Curtin, Diana Ruppe and Haskell King. April 21: Welcome to the Moon series one-acts, including The Red Coat, Let Us Go Out Into the Starry Night, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and Beggars in the House of Plenty. Directors include James Ryan, Billy Hopkins, Anna Thomson Wilson and Kris Eivers. Set to perform are William Jackson Harper, Maureen Sebastian J.J. Kandel, Anna Thomson Wilson, Julie Fitzpatrick and Kris Eivers.

April 28: Beggars in the House of Plenty, directed by Mary Robinson. Cast to be announced.

John Patrick Shanley received the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Doubt, which he adapted and directed for the screen to great acclaim starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. The film adaptation of Doubt received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Shanley's works also include the plays Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Defiance, The Dreamer Examines His Pillow, the musical Romantic Poetry and the Oscar-winning screenplay for "Moonstruck."
