The new musical doesn’t open until the fall, but Playbill is offering a rare insider’s look at a Broadway show in development.
The Prom

The Prom, the Broadway-bound musical comedy about a canceled high school dance and the four fading Broadway stars who seize the opportunity to fight for justice (and a piece of the spotlight), will open on Broadway this fall.

Directed and choreographed by Book of Mormon Tony winner Casey Nicholaw, The Prom had its world premiere at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2016. Based on an original concept by Tony-winning producer Jack Viertel, The Prom is written by Tony-winning Drowsy Chaperone co-creator Bob Martin, and The Wedding Singer and Elf collaborators Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar.

The writers are polishing the musical in preparation for its November 15 Broadway opening night, and Playbill is offering one lucky theatre fan rare access to get a behind-the-scenes look at a new show in development.

The winner will receive two tickets to attend a private New York City developmental lab presentation of The Prom on February 8.

Casting for the lab has not been announced.

Here’s how the producers bill the new Broadway-bound musical: “Four fading Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town Indiana prom—and the press is involved—they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue…and themselves. The town’s parents want to keep the dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny. Now, Broadway’s brassiest are coming to join the fight and they are ready to kick-ball-change the world.”
