After casting a galaxy of women stars in her Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler has returned to the piece herself, recently performing it in Washington, DC at the National Theatre. San Francisco is next on her agenda, where she will perform The Vagina Monologues July 23-Aug. 11 at the Geary Theatre. According to the theatre and her website, this engagement will be Ensler's final solo performance of her material. The Vagina Monologues are just that, solo contemplations of a woman's most intimate body part. Ensler interviewed 200 diverse women, including the elderly, African Americans and Bosnian rape victims, asking them a myriad of questions from "What do you call your vagina?" to "If your vagina got dressed, what would it wear?" The Vagina Monologues continues to play at New York's Westside Theatre and Chicago's Apollo Theatre, where rotating celebrity casts of three perform the work.
The Vagina Monologues are produced at the Geary by Jonathan Reinis and Theatre on the Square. Tickets are $20-$55. The Geary Theatre is located at 415 Geary Street. For reservations, call (415) 433-9500. The Vagina Monologues are on the web at http://www.vaginamonologues.com.
