Maroulis originated the role of hopeful young musician Drew in the Off-Broadway and subsequent Broadway productions of Rock of Ages and is currently reprising the role on the national tour.

Rock of Ages launched its U.S. tour in Chicago last September an will conclude its run July 24 at the National Theatre in Washington, DC.

The Tony-nominated rocker is keeping the details of his involvement under wraps for now, but told Playbill.com, "Adam Shankman called me and he wants me to be a part of the movie. He always wanted me to be a part of the movie from the beginning, and it's just been [a matter of] working out what that is. Now, with the tour ending, I can go and do that."

Newcomer Diego González Boneta stars as Drew in the film that is directed and choreographed by Shankman, who also helmed the movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray. The Rock of Ages film also includes Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Alec Baldwin as Dennis, Julianne Hough as Sherrie, Mary J. Blige as Justice and Russell Brand as Lonny.

Maroulis' new single "You Really Got Me," a cover of the Kinks' classic, dropped July 18. It coincides with the "American Idol" finalist's involvement in the new Fisher-Price toy Rock Star Mickey, which will hit stores in September. (Mickey also sings his own version of "You Really Got Me").

Maroulis will also bring his concert A Night at the Rock Show to Philadelphia's World Café (Sept. 8), New York City's Highline Ballroom (Sept. 9) and New Jersey's Starland Ballroom (Sept. 10).
