News Fechter's The Commission Will Get World Premiere in NYC Fringe The Dreamscape Theatre will stage the world premiere of Steven Fechter's war-crimes play The Commission Aug. 11-25 at the Connelly Theatre as part of the 11th annual New York International Fringe Festival.

Fechter (The Woodsman) has penned "an explosive tale about the uncertainty of love, the cruelty of war and the moral ambiguity of both."

Sarah Gurfield directs the drama, written in 1996 in response to reports of atrocities and mass rape being committed in the former Yugoslavia.

"Set in an unnamed foreign land, the play takes an unflinching look at the minefields of the bedroom as well as the fragments, both personal and political, left behind in the wake of a bloody civil war," according to Dreamscape production notes. "The story spins backward in time to reveal the interlocking lives of a young soldier named Ivan; Tulia, the fiancée he leaves behind; Paula, an American expatriate professor; and her lover Karl, a war crimes investigator with a hidden past."

Steven Fechter's plays include The Mentee (Workshop Theatre Company), The Schiele and The Last Cigarette (Lounge Theater, Los Angeles). After a successful run at Raw Space, his play The Woodsman was turned into a lauded film of the same name starring Kevin Bacon.

The Commission cast includes Zack Calhoon, Reyna de Courcy, Susan Ferrara and Patrick Melville. The Dreamscape Theatre was founded in the summer of 2002 by a pair of directing students from New York University's Playwrights Horizons Theater School. Led by producing artistic director Brad Raimondo, the company has produced 12 productions, including Macbeth, Machinal, Hamlet and the world premiere of Tiny Dynamite. At the 2006 New York International Fringe Festival, The Dreamscape Theatre premiered the ambitious Burning Cities Project, "a collage of dance, theatre and monologues about destruction of cities throughout history."

The creative team also includes stage manager Lisa Weinshrott, assistant stage manager manager Lisa Tateosian, set/lighting designer Nick Francone; and costume designer Naomi Wolff.

The Connelly Theater is located at 220 E. 4th Street, between Avenues A and B. Performances will play Aug. 11 at 7 PM; Aug.12 at 5:30 PM; Aug. 15 at 4:45 PM; Aug. 23 at 10 PM; Aug. 25 at 2 PM.

Tickets are $15 at (212) 279-4488 or www.fringenyc.org.
