Shadowtime, which has a libretto by poet Charles Bernstein, opens in 1940, as Benjamin attempts to escape from Nazi-occupied France to Spain. After being told that he will not be allowed to travel through Spain, he commits suicide. The opera then explores Benjamin's work in a series of self-contained scenes.
Performers include the Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam, the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, pianist Nicolas Hodges, and guitarist Mats Scheidegger. Fr_d_ric Fisbach is the director; Jurjen Hempel conducts.
The opera was co-commissioned by the Lincoln Center Festival, Munich Biennale, Paris's Festival d'Automne, London's Sadler's Wells, and the Ruhr Triennale. It premiered at the Munich Biennale in May 2004.
Shadowtime runs through tomorrow night at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater.
