The musical is based on the Paddy Chayefsky play A Catered Affair. The story centers on an Irish-American couple in the Bronx who come into conflict over their daughter's wedding. The mother insists on making it an extravagant affair—even if it entails spending well beyond their means—straining her relationship with her cab-driver husband.

Fierstein wrote the books for the musicals for La Cage aux Folles and Legs Diamond. A new revival of the former is in the works. He told "Today" that it goes into rehearsal in September.

Playbill On-Line first reported on Fierstein's collaboration with Bucchino on June 8, 2003.

John Bucchino is a cabaret songwriter whose work has been recording by the likes of Barbara Cook and Patti LuPone. He wrote Lavender Girl, one of the three short musicals that made up the Harold Prince-directed 3hree. He also wrote songs for the Dreamworks animated film "Joseph, King of Dreams."
