Livent Inc.'s touring revival of Show Boat, Charlotte D'Amboise' s turn as Roxie Hart in Chicago and Mark Nelson's reprise as Einstein in the tour of Picasso at the Lapin Agile led The South Florida Critics' Association's Carbonell Awards for the best of the region's 1997-98 road shows.

Show Boat, which closed an eight-week run at Fort Lauderdale's Broward Center for the Performing Arts May 17, took four of the six awards bestowed by critics from Miami through the Palm Beaches. In addition to Best Production: Harold Prince was saluted as Best Director, with Michel Bell (Joe) and Jo Ann Hawkins White (Queenie) taking Best Supporting Actor and Actress.

Nelson and D'Amboise were chosen best actor and actress, respectively. A total of 24 shows, tours and non-resident productions, qualified for the annual awards for the calendar year ending Memorial Day. All winners were part of the Pace Theatrical Group's "Broadway Series" which rotated 17 of those productions through five venues.

The national tour of Rent placed second in critics' balloting in several cateogories including Best Production. Also scoring highly in the vote were tours of Tap Dogs and, in its second visit to the area, Miss Saigon.

Drama critics vote on touring shows announced in early summer. Carbonell Awards for resident companies are announced in the fall for the year ending Labor Day by a broader panel of critics and theater professionals. -- Special to Playbill On-Line from Jack Zink
