News Flower Drum Song May Not Reopen on Broadway Flower Drum Song may be the first casualty of the Broadway musicians strike, which began March 7.

A spokesperson for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical said that if the strike is settled imminently — within the next day or two — the musical will reopen and play through its previously announced closing date, March 16. If the strike is not settled quickly, the show will have played its final performance Thursday, March 6. The ABC theatre listings in the New York Times does not list the musical in its March 10 edition.

Flower Drum Song was the first musical to cancel its Friday evening (March 7) performance, prior to the announcement that both Actors’ Equity and Local One (the stagehands union) had joined the strike begun by the Broadway musicians. That announcement closed all Broadway musicals for the weekend, with the exception of Cabaret.
