Performances begin Oct. 19 toward an Oct. 29 opening at the Cherry Lane Theatre's newly renovated Mainstage at 38 Commerce Street off Seventh Avenue in Greenwich Village. It closes Dec. 9.
"Bhutan follows a New England family's ups and downs after the death of their father," according to the producers. "Frances Conroy wonders how she ended up here. Her mother is driving her crazy. Her aunt is stalking a married man. Her brother is in prison. She dreams of Bhutan but can barely find the kitchen door."
Bhutan is a kingdom in Central Asia in the Himalayas.
The cast includes Tasha Lawrence (Craig Wright's The Pavilion at Rattlestick Theatre, and Claire in the national tour of Proof), Sarah Lord (Off Broadway's The Fifth of July at Signature Theatre), Amy Redford (of the film "When I Find the Ocean") and Jedadiah Schultz (a young actor from Laramie, Wyoming, who was a character in documented by The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman).
The artistic team includes Laura Hyman (scenic design), Rebecca J. Bernstein (costume design), Pat Dignan (lighting design) and Bart Fasbender (sound design). Originally developed during the 2005-2006 Cherry Lane Studio season as part of Celebrating Women Playwrights Program, The Cherry Lane Theatre also presented Bhutan in association with New York Stage and Film at the Powerhouse Theatre in Vassar during the summer of 2006.
Daisy Foote's plays include God's Pictures (world premiere at the Indiana Repertory Theater), Farley and Betsy (Women's Project, First Look series), The Hand of God (workshopped at the Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference), and When They Speak of Rita (Primary Stages, 2000). She was honored with the Roger L. Stevens Incentive Award, in association with the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays.
Foote's screenplays include an adaptation of John Steinbeck's "The Winter of Our Discontent" for Steppenwolf Films, "Ghosts In My Room" (based on the life of the writer Lucy Grealy) and the just completed adaptation of Stephen Dobyn's novel "Church of the Dead Girls."
Her play When They Speak Of Rita is included in Smith and Kraus' Volume 3 of "New Plays from A.C.T's Young Conservatory," and her one-act Farley and Betsy is included in Smith and Kraus' "The Women's Project and Productions: 25 One-Act Plays 1975-1999."
Director Yionoulis staged Richard Greenberg's The Violet Hour on Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Biltmore, after having directed its premiere at South Coast Repertory. She directed Greenberg's Three Days of Rain (Obie Award for Direction) and The American Plan, also at MTC, Everett Beekin at Lincoln Center Theater, and The Author's Voice (Ensemble Studio Theatre, Drama Department). She teaches at the Yale School of Drama where she chaired the Department of Acting from 1998-2003.
Bhutan will play Tuesdays at 7 PM, Wednesdays at 11 AM and 8 PM, Thursdays and Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3 and 8 PM. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM are $50 and all other performances are $45. Student Tickets with a valid I.D. are $10.
