Classic Arts News Former Chicago Critic and Teacher Thomas Willis Dies Thomas Willis, a former music and arts critic for the Chicago Tribune, died last week of congestive heart failure, the Tribune reports. He was 76.
Willis joined the Tribune as an assistant in 1957, becoming the paper's music critic in 1966 and its arts editor in 1968.

A longtime teacher, Willis received his Ph.D. in music history from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, in 1966, and joined the school's faculty as a lecturer the following year.

Following his resignation from the Tribune in 1977, Willis worked as a concert presenter for Northwestern's Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, and also served on the music panel for the National Endowment for the Arts.
