Tony winning actor Frank Wood (Side Man) will peruse A Map of Doubt and Rescue at New York Stage and Film's 16th Powerhouse Season, on the Vassar College campus in Poughkeepsie, NY, June 30-July 2. The Susan Miller play will be presented on the Susan Stein Shiva Theatre. Judy Minor directs.

Set at a small town newspaper office, a Hollywood studio, a disaster shelter and the home of Anne Frank, this new drama seeks to "shatter the myth of randomness." Welker White (Jar the Floor) co-stars.

Wood is familiar with the scene up at Vassar. An early production of Side Man was staged by New York Stage and Film several summers ago. Wood is making the New England summer circuit this year: he will be appearing in the Williamstown Theatre Festival's Light Up the Sky later in the season.

In other news, New York Stage and Film's 16th Powerhouse Season, on the Vassar College campus in Poughkeepsie, NY, got officially underway with the opening of playwright Quincy Long's latest, The Lively Lad on June 28. The Main Stage production, directed by Max Mayer, will run through July 15. Long has a recent Off-Broadway success with the Soho Rep production of The Year of the Baby, directed by Daniel Aukin. His greatest triumph to date, however, has been Quills, which ran at New York Theatre Workshop several seasons back.

Lad is a social satire with songs, in which a man is torn between his love for a free-thinking woman and his demanding daughter, a brat named Little Eva Van Huffle. The latter is played by Clea Lewis. Since being released from his duties on the sitcom "Ellen," Lewis has been a theatrical whirlwind, appearing, within a year's time, in Off-Broadway's Things You Shouldn't Say Past Midnight, An Experiment with an Air Pump and Fuddy Meers. Lewis is joined by two Fuddy Meers colleagues, Robert Stanton and Marylouise Burke.

Also in the cast are Guy Boyd, Ivar Brogger, Kenneth Garner, Deirdre Lovejoy, Dan Moran, and Josh Radnor.

The second main stage offering is Richard Greenberg's The Dazzle, a new play expected to be part of the coming Drama Dept. season in New York City. Dazzle, running July 26-Aug. 5, and directed by David Warren, features Greenberg favorite Peter Frechette, as well as Reg Rogers and Francie Swift.

In the Susan Stein Shiva Theatre, NY Stage and Film will present the following works:

• A Map of Doubt and Rescue by Susan Miller, directed by Judy Minor, June 30- July 2.

• Under Cover of Darkness by Cindy Lou Johnson, directed by Michael Greif, July 7- 9. About Liza, who, while mourning her husband, starts up an unlikely friendship with a young man named George. Emily Bergl and Joel Rooks star.

• What Didn't Happen by Christopher Shinn, directed by David Petrarca, July 14-16. Things get tense at a summer barbecue attended by two feuding novelists, a disillusioned actress, a detached psychoanalyst and a shrewd young student. Patrick Breen (Fuddy Meers), Brandon Demery, Herb Foster, Enid Graham (also seen this summer in the Williamstown Theatre Festival's Light Up the Sky), Denis O'Hare (Cabaret), and Laila Robbins (Fool for Love at the McCarter Theatre).

• The Hurdy Gurdy Man by Dick Beebe, directed by Sheryl Kaller, July 21- 23. A nice Boston butcher makes a bet in a bar one night and lives to pay the weighty price. "But was the whole thing a set up? And why does Jimmy's ex-wife keep having visions of a figure known as the Hurdy Gurdy Man?" Maryann Plunkett (Saint Joan), Jay O. Snaders (The Taming of the Shrew), and Cotter Smith (An American Daughter) star.

• Necessary Targets by Eve Ensler, directed by Michael Wilson, July 28- July 30. A strident young disaster specialist. A pampered, urban therapist. An unlikely friendship. A trip to Bosnia. Repercussions.
