Frankie Avalon is back as Teen Angel in Grease, playing San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre Jan. 14-26.
A 1950's teen pop idol and 1960's teen film star, Avalon scored two number hits "Venus" and "Why." His seven popular beach movies with Annette Funicello include "Muscle Beach Party," "Bikini Beach" and "Beach Blanket Bingo," as well as the 1987 parody "Back to the Beach." In the 1978 film version of "Grease" Avalon played Teen Angel.
A hit in its first run on Broadway and a hit in its 1994 revival, Grease takes a '50's nostalgia trip to Rydell High School where squeaky clean new girl Sandy Dumbrowski finds herself in love with bad boy greaser, Danny Zuko. Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey fashioned several "Golden Oldie"-styled hits for the musical, including "Greased Lightnin'," "Summer Nights," "Born to Hand Jive" and "We Go Together."
Tickets go on sale Nov. 17. For ticket information, call (415) 612-7770. The Orpheum Theatre is located at 1192 Market at 8th. The Orpheum Theatre is on the web at http://www.bestofbroadway-sf.com/orpheum.html.
