Presented through July 20, Xanadu brings New Yorkers the disco era of Venice Beach in the al fresco staging of the campy audience favorite that has a book by Tony nominee Douglas Carter Beane and a score by ELO's Jeff Jynne and John Farrar.
John P. McEneny directs a cast that includes Alissa Laderer (Kira), Jamie Roach (Sonny Malone), M.X. Soto (Danny McGuire/Zeus), Kelly Blaze (Calliope/Aphrodite), MaryAnne Piccolo (Melpomene/Medusa), Jake Mendes (Talia), Ricky Dain Jones (Terpischore), Matthew McGloin (Hermes), Jennifer Somers Kipley (Euterpe/Thetis), Linnea Larsdotter (Erato/Hera), Emily Bodkin (Thalia) and Arielle Vullo (Urania).
Xanadu has choreography by Karen Curlee, musical direction by Laura Mulholland, set design by Sarah Edkins and costume design by Sandye Renz and Lauren Fajardo.
Xanadu, which centers on a Greek muse sent to Earth to help out a struggling street artist, premiered on Broadway May 23, 2007, at the Helen Hayes Theatre, where it played a 512-performance run. It earned four Tony Award nominations, including Best Book and Best Score.
Piper Theatre will also stage an original production of The Island of Dr. Moreau, inspired by the H.G. Wells novel, running July 7, 14 and 21 at the Old Stone House in Washington Park. Visit PiperTheatre.org.
