News French Satire Dr. Knock, Or The Triumph Of Medicine Will Get Rare NYC Revival The Mint Theater Company will present Jules Romains' 1923 play Dr. Knock, Or The Triumph Of Medicine Off-Broadway beginning April 14.

Gus Kaikkonen will stage the production that officially opens May 10 and will run through May 30th at the Mint. Casting has not been announced. Romains' satire centers on a doctor who arrives in a small French village with a rather healthy population. The doctor begins offering free consultations to the townsfolk in which he diagnoses them with exotic maladies in order to prescribe treatment. His business thrives with villagers who quickly become hypochondriacs.

The play premiered in Paris in 1923, running for five years with actor Louis Jouvet in the title role. The actor would continue to star as the Doctor until his death. He also preserved his performance in several screen versions. Dr. Knock made its New York debut under the direction of Richard Boleslavsky for the American Laboratory Theater in 1928. It has not been revived since.
