The transfer of Michael Grandage’s production features its original cast, led by Michael Sheen and Frank Langella as Frost and Nixon, respectively. The drama, which is set in 1977, is based on the interviews between the British talk-show host David Frost and the disgraced American President.
The cast also includes Elliot Cowan as the anti-Nixon liberal author Jim Reston; Corey Johnson as Jack Brennan, Nixon’s ex-Chief of Staff; Rufus Wright as British TV exec John Birt; and Vincent Marzello as the Washington journalist Bob Zelnick.
The drama climaxes with the Frost/Nixon interviews, though much of the plot concerns the high-risk process of setting up the encounter.
A recent casting notice revealed that Frost/Nixon will begin previews at a Broadway theatre to be announced on or about April 8, 2007, with an official opening April 22. New York rehearsals will commence March 5. Langella and Sheen will head the Broadway cast.
Frost/Nixon is Morgan’s debut stage play. His screen credits include the recently released movie "The Queen" starring Helen Mirren, which won a Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival. Langella is one of the U.S.'s most popular film, television and stage stars. Best known for his role as Dracula (1979), he recently appeared in George Clooney's "Good Night and Good Luck" but made his Broadway debut in the 1960's and won his first Tony Award for Edward Albee's Seascape (1975). In between, he has ranged onstage between Strindberg (The Father) to Noel Coward (Present Laughter). He has also been a regular at New York's Shakespeare Festival. Other Broadway credits include Amadeus, and Turgenev's Fortune's Fool (2002, adapted by English writer Mike Poulton) in which he played opposite Alan Bates and for which he won a second Tony.
Sheen’s previous Donmar production resulted in an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance in the title role of Caligula. Other stage credits include The U.N. Inspector at the National and on Broadway, Amadeus in Peter Hall’s 1999 revival of Peter Shaffer’s Tony-winning play.
Grandage currently has two musical productions in the West End with his revivals of Guys and Dolls and Evita.
