Playwright William Goodhart, who penned Generation, a Broadway hit in 1965-66, died of heart disease Oct. 20, The New York Times reported. He was 74. Gene Saks directed the Henry Fonda vehicle, about a father struggling to understand his daughter and son-in-law. In a decade when the generation gap seemed to be widening, Generation spoke to a wide audience. A. Larry Haines was nominated for a Supporting Actor Tony Award for his performance. A film version (written by Mr. Goodhart) starred David Janssen.

Mr. Goodhart was a New Haven native who studied physics at Yale before joining the Army, The Times reported. He later studied drama at Yale and was a scenic and lighting designer.

Other Hollywood projects include "The Heretic" and "Cloud Dancer."
