Classic Arts News Genoa's Teatro Carlo Felice Takes The Barber of Seville to Shanghai
The opera company of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy, is traveling to Shanghai to perform Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia on September 8 and 9. The performances are part of the programming for "The Year of Italy in China," an initiative undertaken by the Italian and Chinese governments.
The performances will take place in the brand-new Oriental Opera Hall at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center (designed by French architect Paul Andreu) in the city's ultramodern (and rapidly expanding) district of Pudong.

In addition, according to a press release on the opera house's website (, the company will open an August 30 dress rehearsal of the production to members of the Chinese community in Genoa.

Matteo Beltrami conducts a cast including Gabriele Viviani as Figaro, Tomoko Viviani as Rosina, Filippo Adami as Count Almaviva, Alfonso Antoniozzi as Dr. Bartolo, Giovanni Battista Parodi as Basilio and Francesca Valeri as Berta. According to Il Giornale della musica, Chinese actor Shi Yang will serve as a "co-protagonist," narrating the story in Chinese for the audience over the course of the performance.
