Co-creator Nancy Holson spoke with Playbill about the genesis of the new musical revue, which begins June 22 at The Triad.

Me The People: The Trump America Musical, a new musical revue with book and lyrics by Nancy Holson (Bush Wars, The News in Revue on PBS), will begin performances June 22 at The Triad on West 72nd Street. Watch footage from the production in the video above.

Directed and choreographed by Jay Falzone, opening night is scheduled for June 29.

Holson told Playbill that she began writing the show after the presidential inauguration. “The day after the inauguration was the Women's March. I started writing it the next day, and 151 days later, and here we are.”

Audiences, she said, “will be surprised that they will actually be able to laugh. Laughter is really bonding, and they are going to be in an audience filled with other people that are like-minded. It's very communal. It's really a release.”

The cast includes Aiesha Alia Dukes, Mitchel Kawash, Richard Spitaletta, and Mia Weinberge.

Me The People, conceived by Jim Russek, Holson, and Falzone, is described as “an uproarious take on the craven, self-dealing Trump agenda intent on tearing apart our government and building a stupid wall. The show delivers a topical, up-to-the minute mockumentary of red-white-and-orange America.”

“There is a long-standing tradition of countering our darkest moments with political satire,” said producer Russek. “From Will Rogers and Lenny Bruce to Tom Lehrer and today's late-night comics, laughter has always been a first amendment weapon of choice.”

The production will also have costume design by Stephen Smith, lighting and sound by Shannon Epstein, prop design by Max Kilsheimer, and wig design by Kathy Pecevich. James Higgins serves as musical director and arranger, Dana Robbins is the production stage manager, and David Rigano is the assistant director.
