News Glenn Close Misses London Streetcar

There were unhappy scenes at the box office of the National Theatre last night when patrons were informed that Glenn Close was ill and wouldn't be able to perform in A Streetcar Named Desire.

The news was bound to be a disappointment, and no understudy relishes the groans when people realize a star is "off," but Miss Close's understudy, Wendy Morgan, gamely went on stage and gave an accomplished performance as the mentally disturbed, fading southern belle Blanche Du Bois.

Miss Close has a throat infection, and will not be performing Oct. 22 and there is a question mark over the next few days, but it is hoped that she will be back on stage very soon.
