Live From Golgotha, Gore Vidal's satire on the television industry, advertising and religion, is to be staged at the Drill Hall in December. The play will appeal to Vidal's many fans in England, although he's known as an essayist, novelist and wit rather than a playwright.

Coming from a patrician American family, Vidal was related by marriage to Jackie Kennedy and was active in Democrat Party politics. He was famously caustic about Ronald Reagan's presidency, describing him as "a triumph of the embalmer's art."

As a young writer in the late 1940's, he caused a storm with his openly gay novel "The City and the Pillar" and has gone on to write many more, often dealing with American history and political themes.
