His father, Latin and Pop singer Julio Iglesias, is a cultural icon. Separate from his father, on his own, he took home a Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Latin Pop Performance for his self-titled debut album. At first, this may sound more like a music legend than an introduction to a story on theatre history. But, on Sept. 18, singer Enrique Iglesias will indeed make a bit of theatre history with the opening of his first Off-Broadway show as a producer, Four Guys Named Jose and Una Mujer Named Maria. Preview performances began Aug. 25.

Iglesias teamed with Broadway veteran Dasha Epstein to create Four Guys, which they describe as a "celebration of Latino song and dance." Four Guys stars former Miss Florida (1998-99) and Miss America finalist Lissette Gonzalez (Maria) as well as Phillip Anthony, Allen Hidalgo, Henry Gainza and Ricardo Puente, the four "Jose's."

In a prepared statement about the show Iglesias described co-producer Epstein as "someone I've known all my life," and credits her with introducing him to the show and its music.

Four Guys is directed by Susanna Tubert and was co-conceived by David Coffman and Dolores Prida, who also wrote the book. Choreography is by Maria Torres (now performing in Swing!) and music direction is by Oscar Hernandez (The Capeman.)

Epstein told Playbill On-Line that even though Iglesias has a full schedule with his musical career, he is actively involved with the theatre project and checks on its progress frequently. "He's in touch almost daily," Epstein told Playbill On-Line. Tickets to 4 Guys Named José and Una Mujer Named Maria run $35 (previews) and $37.50-$47.50 after the show opens. Four Guys runs at the Blue Angel Theatre, 323 W. 44 St. Call Telecharge at (212) 239 6200 or Spanish language Telecharge at (212) 239-6240.
