News Guys and Dolls Revival Unlikely for Spring It is doubtful the acclaimed, Olivier-winning, Michael Grandage-directed production of Guys and Dolls, which was presented by the Donmar Warehouse at London's Piccadilly Theatre, will arrive on Broadway in 2008 as previously reported.

Director Grandage told Daily Variety that because of the possible writers' strike in Hollywood, the four stage and screen actors he had hoped to sign for the lead roles have been unable to commit to the project. The industry paper says the actors need to be available for film work prior to the beginning of the strike.

The musical — a co-production with the Donmar and the Ambassador Theatre Group – will, however, play Australia's Princess Theater Melbourne in March.

Guys and Dolls was the Donmar's first production away from their Covent Garden home base. The classic musical opened at the Piccadilly June 1, 2005, with Ewan McGregor and Jane Krakowski as, respectively, Sky Masterson and Miss Adelaide. Krakowski won an Olivier Award for her performance, and the show received the Olivier for Outstanding Musical Production. The revival finished its run April 14, 2007.

Based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. The original Broadway production opened at Broadway's 46th Street Theatre in November 1950, running 1,200 performances before closing Nov. 28, 1953. Among the premiere cast were Robert Alda as Sky Masterson, Isabel Bigley as Sarah Brown, Sam Levene as Nathan Detroit and Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide. Blaine re-created her role for the 1955 film, which also starred Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson, Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown and Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit.

The most recent Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls featured Nathan Lane and Faith Prince. That Tony-winning revival, directed by Jerry Zaks, played 1,143 performances at the Martin Beck Theatre from March 1992-January 1995.
