Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow, who will return to her role on "Glee" later this season, has been offered a role in the film version of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, according to

The award-winning actress told EW, "It sounds cool. I just got the script and I will read it on the plane home tomorrow. But it sounds like it could be fun." Producer Jenno Topping also confirmed that film veteran Tom Cruise is currently in discussions for a role in the movie musical.

Adam Shankman, who also directed and choreographed the film adaptation of Hairspray, will direct Rock of Ages' big screen premiere.

As previously reported, the musical's book writer, Chris D'Arienzo, has penned the screenplay for the film that will be produced by Rock of Ages Broadway producers Carl Levin, Matthew Weaver and Scott Prisand, with Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot. Executive producers are Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver, who are also producers of the Broadway production.

Rock of Ages, which uses hits from the 1980s as its score, originally premiered Off-Broadway at New World Stages in October 2008. The musical transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway in March 2009, earning five Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Direction and Best Actor for Constantine Maroulis

Gwyneth Paltrow is the daughter of late film director Bruce Paltrow and veteran stage actress Blythe Danner. An Academy Award winner for her work in "Shakespeare in Love," Gwyneth Paltrow's other screen credits include "Country Strong," "Proof," "Emma," "Great Expectations," "Sliding Doors," "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Bounce." Onstage, she has been seen in various productions at the Williamstown Theatre Festival; Proof marked her London stage debut.
