News Hairspray and Branagh Win Variety Club Showbusiness Awards The West End production of the Tony-winning Hairspray earned the Musical Theatre Award, and Kenneth Branagh won the Stag Performance Award for his role in the Donmar Warehouse's production of Ivanov (recently at Wyndham's Theatre) at the Variety Club's 56th Annual Showbusiness Awards, which were presented Nov. 16 in a ceremony at Grosvenor House in Central London.

Also winning awards were James McAvoy, soon to be seen in the West End in Three Days of Rain, who won the Variety Club Film Award for his roles in such films as "Atonement," "The Last King of Scotland" and "Wanted"; and Robert Webb, who was recently seen in the West End in Fat Pig, took the Variety Club Comedy Award with TV partner David Mitchell. In a speech, Variety Club's awards chairman John Sachs commented, "The Variety Club Showbiz Awards are the oldest and most established awards in the UK that recognise the outstanding talent in the field of entertainment. Due to the generous donations of all our guests and supporters, the vital funds raised tonight will enable Variety Club to continue to support children and young people throughout the UK."

The ceremony will be broadcast on satellite channel Sky1 on Nov. 30.
