The New Line Records release (which hit stores July 10, prior to the film's nationwide release July 20) has maintained a spot in the top ten on "The Billboard 200." "Hairspray" also hit its ninth week at No. 1 on the Top Independent Albums chart.

The "Hairspray" CD features 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers — "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." The new songs were also penned by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who received the Tony Award for their Hairspray score.

The album also features the song "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" (heard over the end credits, but cut from the film's plot) as sung by all three incarnations of Tracy Turnblad — original film star Rikki Lake, original Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winokur and film star Nikki Blonsky.

The soundtrack is produced by Shaiman and features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney and Peter Mokran. The track list follows:

Adam Shankman directs and choreographs the "Hairspray" film, which stars John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, Brittany Snow as Amber von Tussel, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussel, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelly as Seaweed, Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.

The film is based on the still-running musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The movie musical was adapted by Leslie Dixon from the Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan book and features the score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with additional songs created for the film.
