News Hairspray's Winokur Joins All-Star Mack & Mabel Concert March 31, 2003 Hairspray leading lady Marissa Jaret Winokur has joined the cast of the upcoming New York concert performance of Mack & Mabel on March 31, 2003.

Winokur joins the previously announced Brian Stokes Mitchell, Leslie Uggams, Nathan Lane, Donna McKechnie, Michael Feinstein, Debbie Gravitte and Douglas Sills for the one-night-only concert of the Jerry Herman musical to benefit Gay Men's Health Crisis. Also taking part in the evening will be the Radio City Musical Hall Rockettes and Uptown Express from the New York City Gay Men's Chorus. Herman, who composed the show's score, will personally supervise the presentation.

Arthur Allan Seidelman will direct the concert, which will feature choreography by Dan Siretta and musical direction by Donald Pippin. Jon Wilner will produce the event. As previously reported, Wilner and Seidelman hope eventually to stage a full production of Mack & Mabel (Seidelman helmed a Los Angeles concert version) and are aiming at Broadway.

Based on the life of Hollywood producer Mack Sennett and silent screen star Mabel Normand, Mack & Mabel features a score by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart. The musical opened at Broadway's Majestic Theatre on Oct. 6, 1974, where it played 66 performances before closing Nov. 30. The original cast included Robert Preston as Mack and Bernadette Peters as Mabel. (Peters, incidentally, will begin previews in her latest outing — the Sam Mendes-directed revival of Gypsy — the same night as the concert.)

Though short-lived, Mack & Mabel received eight 1975 Tony nominations, including those for Best Musical, Best Actor (Preston), Best Actress (Peters), Best Director (Gower Champion), Best Book of a Musical (Stewart), Best Scenic Designer (Robert Wagner), Best Costume Designer (Patricia Zipprodt) and Best Choreographer (Champion). The Jerry Herman score includes such classic tunes as "Time Heals Everything," "I Won't Send Roses," "Tap Your Troubles Away," "Wherever He Ain't" and "Movies Were Movies." Benefit level tickets, priced at $250, $500 and $1,000, are available by calling (212) 367-1472 and are prime orchestra seats. The $500 and $1,000 tickets also include the VIP post-concert reception. Tickets priced at $50, $60, $75, $100 and $150 will be available in early January through the Avery Fisher Hall box office at (212) 875-5030.
