Playwright David Hare is at work on a new play entitled The Permanent Way for the first year of Nicholas Hytner's term at the National Theatre.

There aren't any details about the play as of yet, beyond the title. Hare told Playbill On-Line (Jan. 9), "I haven't written a word of it." Hare did say he would be working with Max Stafford-Clark, artistic director of the Out of Joint Theatre. "I'm going back to where I came from — the Fringe," he said.

Hare's Breath of Life, expected on Broadway in 2003, continues on at the West End's Theatre Royal, Haymarket through March 1 with stars Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith. His works include Amy's View, Via Dolorosa, The Blue Room, The Judas Kiss, Skylight, Racing Demon and Plenty. Film pundits have mentioned Hare as a possible Academy Award nominee for adapting Michael Cunningham's book, "The Hours," into a film.
