Birtwistle won in the choral category for The Ring Dance of the Fragments and in the orchestral category for Night's Black Bird, a work commissioned by the Roche corporation and performed by the Cleveland Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival and Carnegie Hall.
Errollyn Wallen won the BBC Radio 3 Listeners Award for Spirit Symphony: Speed Dating for Two Orchestras. Other winners include Tarik O'Regan for the vocal work Sainte; Michael Finnissy, in the instrumental solo and duo category, for Verdi Transcriptions Book 4; Ian Gardiner in the wind and brass category for Toccata, Canzona, Ricercare; Howard Skempton for the chamber work Tendrils; and Ruth Byrchmore in the liturgical category for A Birthday.
In the new media category, Robert Jarvis won for Disappear, an installation featuring "endangered sounds." Edward Rushton won in the stage works category for his second opera, Birds. Barks. Bones.
