Isobel Lennart wrote the original script for the 1964 musical that has a score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill. Chocolate Factory artistic director David Babani told the Daily Mail that Fierstein has been tasked with "revising the show’s book and making it acceptable for an audience today."

Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer will stage Funny Girl, which begins performances Nov. 20 ahead of a Dec. 2 opening night. Performances are currently scheduled through March 5, 2016. The entire run is sold out.

Sheridan Smith will star as Fanny Brice, the role famously originated by Barbra Streisand.

Funny Girl tells the true story of Fanny Brice, who rose from the Lower East Side of New York to become one of Broadway's biggest stars under producer Florenz Ziegfield. While she was cheered onstage as a great comedienne, offstage she faced a doomed relationship with the man she loved. The score includes such songs as "People," "I'm the Greatest Star" and "Don't Rain on My Parade."
