HBO Documentary Films recently acquired domestic TV rights to the film, which is directed by Cameron Crowe and explores the artist's early career and collaboration with fellow singer-songwriter Leon Russel on their 2010 album, "The Union."

T-Bone Burnett, Crowe and Michelle Panek are producers on the documentary that began filming in November 2009 and chronicles the writing and recording process of "The Union."

The documentary is described as "an extremely candid portrait of one of the world’s most treasured artists and performers, and his extraordinary journey of the heart – one that sent him to powerfully reclaim and reinvigorate the life and musical career of Russell, to whom John hadn’t spoken in over 38 years. 'The Union' is a captivating and exhilarating real-life experience of musical creation and generosity."

"The Union" had its world-premiere screening in April as the kick-off event at the Tribeca Film Festival.

John won a Tony Award in 2000 for Best Original Musical Score on Aida. He has also been nominated for his work on The Lion King and Billy Elliot. The artist is a five-time Grammy Award winner as well as an Academy Award winner for "The Lion King," and his numerous albums include "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Tumbleweed Connection," "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" and his self-titled 1970 album.
