News   "Heartbreakers," "Thomas Crown Affair" and "Mermaids" Join List of Developing MGM Musicals
With musical stagings of "Legally Blonde," "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "Marty," "Get Shorty" and "The Night They Raided Minsky's" on the way, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.'s "MGM On Stage" program seems to be well on its way.

The initiative —  which aims to license MGM's film catalogue for development into stage works — launched in January 2003 and has continued to expand with more projects in the works.

Musical versions of "Heartbreakers," "Those Lips, Those Eyes," "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "Mermaids" are being developed, MGM representatives confirmed. These titles join the projects mentioned last year, including "New York, New York," "The Fabulous Baker Boys," "Bull Durham," "Mr. Holland's Opus," "The Idolmaker," "Rocky," "Moonstruck," "The Pink Panther," "Where's Pappa?" and more.

Possibilities for stage play adaptations include "Rain Man," "Benny and Joon" and "Midnight Cowboy."

Broadway has already witnessed MGM film-to-stage productions including Sweet Smell of Success, Meet Me in St. Louis, Singin' in the Rain, All's Well that Ends Well and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

MGM On Stage is part of the new division, MGM Entertainment Business Group, headed by longtime MGM executive Darcie Denkert.
