The film version of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's hit Off-Broadway musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, emerged as one of the top winners in the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. The movie won two prizes, a directing award for Mitchell and an audience award.

Hedwig had a long run at Off-Broadway's Jane Street Theatre. The show, which took the form of a concert of the titular fictional band, told the tale of Hedwig, a tortured German-American transsexual and perennial victim of love. Mitchell originated the lead role, and sang all the score's rock-oriented songs. The Bell House is located at 149 Seventh St. between Second and Third avenues in Gowanus; call (718) 643-6510 or visit www.thebellhouseny.com for more information.
